About Our Farm

Balm and Honey Farm is a biodynamic vegetable, flower and honey bee farm in the piney woods of East Texas. Using organic and sustainable methods, we mindfully tend the land for the benefit of our families, neighbors and community.

About Us

We are Matt and Brin Nichols, fifth generation Cass County residents and first generation farmers and beekeepers. We are passionate about caring for our local community through healthy food and intentional relationships.

 

Matt is the farm's fixer, and there's nothing he can't build or repair. On the farm, Matt is the resident "bee charmer", often working with bees without a suit. To know Matt is to love him; the guy is hilarious and a known jokester. Matt's favorite crop to grow is "Nannie Peas", a southern pea grown by his grandparents for decades and re-introduced to Cass County by Matt in 2020.

 

 Brin is Matt's wife, and founder of Balm and Honey Farm. As a former news reporter (ABC News, CBS News), Brin became interested in local food security and the plight of the honey bee after a particularly troubling interview. At home in the dirt, Brin's favorite crop to grow is heirloom tomatoes... and multi-colored butter beans... and rainbow-eared corn.

When she's not caring for seedlings or honey bees or animals, Brin is an avid knitter, reader and coffee drinker.

 

Together, the Nichols maintain a licensed foster/adoptive home.
